Coldest Temperatures Of The Year Hit The UK

The past weekend saw plummeting temperatures, power cuts and travel disruptions across the UK.

The coldest night of the year presented itself on Monday, with temperatures plummeting to as low as -13°C in some parts of the UK. Wales experienced the worst level of snowfall with 12.5 inches falling in Sennybridge on Sunday.

Teachers, staff and children up and down the country were forced to stay home as the icy roads and persistent snowfall shut 100s of schools on both Monday and Tuesday. In the West Midlands, the NHS went as far as putting out an urgent appeal to local 4×4 drivers to help get stranded nurses to hospitals.

The Heart of England thanked all those who volunteered their 4x4s to help stranded nurses

The freezing conditions not only stranded hospital workers but holidaymakers as well: Heathrow Airport was forced to delay hundreds of its flights, and 25% got cancelled altogether.

Members of the public quickly took to social media to post snapshots of snowy and frosty scenes, gaining hundreds of likes and retweets throughout the day.
